Joel and Victoria Osteen’s daily devotional May 31, 2017 – Praising in the Midnight Hour

Today’s Scripture: "About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose." - (Acts 16:25-26, NIV)

Topic: Praising in the Midnight Hour [Wednesday May 31, 2017]

Paul and Silas were put in jail for spreading good news. It wasn’t fair. They were beaten with rods without a trial. It was unjust. As they sat in the prison, bloody, bruised and uncomfortable, they began to sing praises to God. All of the sudden, there was a great earthquake. The prison doors flung open, the chains fell off and they walked out as free men. What happened? They praised their way to victory!

Judge Not

Topic: Judge Not [31/05/2017]

Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Matthew 7:1. Read: Matt 7:1-5

In Christendom today, many call judgmental spirit the spirit of God. They condemn others that are not like them. Some believe that, only those who belong to their denomination will make heaven, others who are not of their fold will go to hell. They believe Church can save, no, only Jesus can save because He alone is the way, not the Church nor religion. Religion kills. Jesus said, if you judge others, you shall be judged also by others. You must not practice 'holier than thou attitude' but love all and tell them the truth about God's kingdom. It's not your job to judge anyone but God's.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24

When we come into a christian meeting or gathering, we expect that the presence of the Lord will be amongst us. There is this sense of anticipation that 'the Lord will show up in our midst tonight.' So with that, we try to tune our 'spiritual antenna' so that we can be aware of when the Lord shows up. Most times, we look forward to the music minister singing some heart-touching, emotion-steering songs during the course of leading the congregation in worship, then we will say 'the Lord is here, wow! Glory!'

You hypocrite, first get the beam of timber out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the tiny particle out of your brother’s eye. — Matthew 7:5

Loving people unconditionally is the greatest gift we can give them (and ourselves). I have learned that one of the secrets to my own personal peace is to let people be who God made them to be, rather than try to make people be who I would like them to be. I do my best to enjoy their strengths and be merciful toward their weaknesses because I have plenty of my own. I don’t need to try to take the speck out of someone else’s eye while I have a telephone pole in my own.

5 Things You Should Never Say to a Child

If you have a child, are responsible for a child, or have children around you in any way and at any time, you must erase these words from your vocabulary and refrain from saying them to a child. This is because a child’s mind and perception of the world is very fragile in their formative years, so you have to be careful not to impact them negatively with your words. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 things you should never say to a child.

“Practice Makes Perfect”

This popular phrase is what most children have grown up hearing and most parents erroneously believe that this phrase encourages a child to work harder and attain great things. However, most of the time, this is not so. This adage sends a message that if a child doesn’t win or excel, it means the child didn’t work hard enough. This weakens the child’s confidence as he/she grows up believing every failure is caused by his/her incompetence or inability to put in enough effort. It’s better to say instead that ‘practice makes better’ rather than ‘practice makes perfect’.

Key Verse: "Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light" (Amos 5:18).

The judgment of God upon sinners is imminent. It is going to be a day of catastrophe and calamity, gloom and misery, desolation and astonishment and indeed, a day of a lamentation and confusion. It is a day that no sinner would wish to pass through. This day of outpouring of God’s fury, indignation and wrath upon the world is referred to as the day of the Lord in the Scripture.

Matthew 16:21, "From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day."

Matthew 16:20-28

Despite the abundant and clear prophecies about His death and resurrection, Jesus' disciples didn't understand or remember Jesus' words until after His resurrection (Lk. 24:5-9). Luke records twice that Jesus' sayings about His resurrection were hidden from the disciples. It is interesting to note, however, that the chief priests and Pharisees remembered Jesus' prophecies about His resurrection (Mt. 27:63) when His disciples didn't.

Scripture: Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men – Proverbs 22:29

Thought For The Day: Hard work is the cure for hard life.

It has been observed that a major decadence of our generation is laziness and idleness. Many people want to get everything very fast without working for it. As a result, they embark on short-cuts that eventually cut their lives and destinies short. No one wants to embrace the discipline of hard work. That is why many people are suffering today.

The world says that all we need to do is be decent, respectable, and reasonable. True, that is all one needs to do to be a member of the Great Society, but to be a member of the Kingdom of God, there must be an inner change. A Communist in Hyde Park, London, pointed to a tramp and said, “Communism will put a new suit on that man.” A Christian standing nearby said, “Yes, but Christ will put a new man in that suit!”

Joel and Victoria Osteen’s daily devotional May 30, 2017 – Stored Up Blessings

Today’s Scripture: "Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men!" - (Psalm 31:19, NKJV)

Topic: Stored Up Blessings [Tuesday May 30, 2017]

Scripture talks about how God has blessings stored up for those that honor Him. Think about that. God has contracts, houses, ideas, good breaks that already have your name on them! They’ve been stored up for you. The question is, how do you see them released? Number one: by honoring God and keeping Him first place. Then number two: by making room for them in your thinking. You’ve got to believe that something big is in your future. You’ve got to declare His promises over your life. You have to see with your eyes of faith what God can do.

There are so many interpretations to the action the prodigal son took, but in this context, we want to look at his sin, the gravity of his action. We all know that before a Will can be read, the owner must have been dead. No one allows his Will to be read why he is still alive. The prodigal son went to meet his father and said, father, I want my own portion of the inheritance that should fall to me after you've dead. He gave him.

But, we must appreciate the fact that, no matter how much of effort we put in, we cannot get the job done by ourselves. I am excited that we have come to the concluding part of this month’s teaching, trusting God that you have begun working on your family. Besides, I believe you are seeing to the effective nurturing of your home in the way of the Lord, with tangible result.

This week, on a concluding note, I shall be discussing on, Building Your Family on the Rock. God is the one who instituted the home. Allowing Jesus Christ to take His rightful place in your family, and making Him the central focus, makes it possible for your home to be transformed into the Garden of Eden that He intended it to be.

God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. - 2 Corinthians 5:19

Very few unsaved people today have ever really heard the “good news.” Why? Because too many Christians are busy telling the world God is mad at them. And telling them that they’re terrible and wrong. Some call that “good news,” but it’s not, and it’s not what God has commissioned us to share.

Thought For The Day: To surrender your life to the dictates of your flesh is to forfeit your destiny.

The flesh is the greatest enemy of destiny. There are many people who followed the dictates of their flesh and lost their destiny. This was the tragedy of Esau. He followed the craving of his flesh and lost his birthright to Jacob.

Mark 8:33, "But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men."

MARK 8:30-33

Jesus was not implying that Peter and Satan were one-and-the-same, but was referring to the fact that Satan had inspired Peter's statement. This type of metaphor was used elsewhere in scripture such as when God spoke to the serpent in the garden of Eden (Gen. 3:15) as though addressing Satan. The serpent was merely the vehicle of communication Satan used to tempt Adam and Eve, while Peter was the vehicle Satan used to tempt Jesus. Ephesians 6:12 reveals that our warfare isn't with people, but against the spiritual powers who inspire and use people. Jesus recognized that Peter's reaction to His prophecy about His death was motivated by His enemy, Satan, so He went right to the source.

They are bearers of Good News—the good tidings that “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3). Money can’t buy it. Man’s righteousness can’t earn it. Social prestige can’t help you acquire it. Morality can’t purchase it. It is, as Isaiah said, “without money and without price.”

But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. 2 Peter 2:22. Read: 2 Pe 1:1-22.

Prior to the preachers and teachers of "Eternal Security" i.e, once saved is forever saved, God and His word is against such teaching and teachers. No human in his right senses would vomit and go back to eat his vomit and apostle Peter made us to understand that, once saved is not forever saved. He said if the Lord did not spare the holy angels but threw them down to hell, did not spare the old world and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, why would humans think He will spare anyone who has known the way of righteousness but deviate from it? "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning". 2 Pet 2:20.

For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying. 1 Corinthians 14:14

How sweet it is to pray in tongues. It's one of the best gifts the Lord gave to the church. God is a Spirit, and we can only relate with Him with our spirit (John 4:24). Because prayer is the chief means for us to relate with God, He gave us this special gift of speaking in tongues. So that through it, our spirit can relate with God, Who is a Spirit. So, when we pray in tongues, our spirit prays (1 Corinthians 14:14). But we must know that it is the Holy Spirit that aids the process (Acts 2:4).

One thing children are not is complicated. Children have no trouble letting you know what they want, running into your arms when they are afraid, or giving you a big generous kiss, sometimes for no apparent reason. They are not sophisticated enough to hide their hearts or feelings very well, and as a result, communicating with them can be easy and refreshing.

We live in modern times where a lot of virtues our parents upheld are pushed aside as being old-fashioned. Liberality appears to be the password of the new generation. Thank God, the Bible was not inspired by man’s customs and ideologies else several updates would have become mandatory. What is contained therein was inspired by the Holy Spirit, who is eternal. The Word of God in 2 Timothy 3:16 says: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Self-denial is an important part of the Christian life. Jesus sacrificed His life for us and He demands that we die to ourselves that we might experience the new life He has provided. We do this first by recognizing that we can't save ourselves by our own effort and, second, by trusting God - not self - for salvation. Then daily, we need to deny our own wisdom and seek God's wisdom and direction for our lives.

I soon found out there was one thing I must do if I was to stay on the bicycle—keep moving forward. If I ceased to go forward, I would fall and hurt myself. So it is in the Christian life. We can never live this life on the highest plane unless we are continually growing and moving forward. Even as God, Jesus Christ was tempted by Satan. Did Jesus had the potential to sin? Could Jesus Christ have fallen for victim of Satan's temptations? It's an emphatic YES. Jesus had the potential to sin, He could have fallen victim to Satan's temptation. Because He was in the flesh and the flesh is susceptible to sin, if not Satan would never had bothered tempting Him. Scriptures says in Hebrews 4:13 that "for we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning."

Matthew 16:18, "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Matthew 16:13-19

Some people have mistakenly interpreted this passage to say that Peter was the foundation on which Christ would build His Church. However, that would violate many scriptures that refer to Jesus as the "chief cornerstone."

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants. Psalm 116:15

My mother, so dignified and proper her entire life, now lay in a hospice bed, held captive by debilitating age. Struggling for breath, her declining condition contradicted the gorgeous spring day that danced invitingly on the other side of the windowpane.

Dunamis’ Daily Devotional May 28, 2017 by Pastor Paul Enenche - The Impact of Joy on Destiny Fulfilment

Topic: The Impact of Joy on Destiny Fulfilment [Sunday May 28, 2017]

Scripture: Then he said unto them Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10

Thought For The Day: Anywhere joy is in short supply, strength will also be in short supply.

The Scripture makes it clear that one reason God created us is to fulfil destiny. Everyone on earth is living to carry out a Divine assignment. However, Divine strength is needed to fulfil destiny. To be a weakling, therefore, is to forfeit your destiny.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above . . . — James 1:17

These are not to be used selfishly for our own profit, but for the glory of God and for the building of His kingdom. Our personalities, our intelligence, and our capabilities are gifts from His own bountiful hand. If we divert their use for our own profit, we become guilty of selfishness.
