Topic: Don’t Be Irreverent — Monday August 28, 2017.
Text: Exodus 21:1-17
Key Verse: "And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death" (Exodus 21:17).
Our society is fast moving away from sanity. Daily, the news media are awash with abominable tales that were unheard of only a few years back. Apart from the great moral breakdown occasioned by the New Age Movement, Post-modernism and Secular Humanism teachings prevalent today, there is a new form of rebellion where children are rising up against their parents, resisting every form of control and restriction. God wanted the nation of Israel to live a more organised life different from other nations around. This was why He gave them moral laws to ensure an orderly society where the sanctity of human life and rights of every person are respected.
In the today’s passage, He particularly warned against children rising in rebellion against their parents. God views parents as His representatives on earth and any act of irreverence, insult or assault on parents by the children is viewed as directed against God. If we wish to have a saner society, then we must bring back the standard of the word of God to our families and societies. Christian families must not raise their children by the rules and principles of the ungodly, secular society. We must raise our children and govern our homes by the principles of God’s word. We must also resist every attempt by the society to remove the teaching of the knowledge of the Scriptures in the education and upbringing of our children.
We must not be ignorant of the scheme of the devil to destroy and completely erase the knowledge of God from our society. The most effective way we can do this is by ensuring that we unequivocally, entrench the word of God as the governing principles in our families; teach our children to love and reverence God and show great respect for the values of the family life, respect for parents, elders in the society and constituted authorities.
Thought for the day: Dishonouring parents amounts to dishonouring God.
