Text: Hebrews 11:32-40
Key Verse: "And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions" (Hebrews 11:32,33).
When Hudson Taylor went to China, he made the voyage on a sailing vessel. As it neared the channel between the southern Malay Peninsula and the island of Sumatra, the missionary heard an urgent knock on his stateroom door. As he opened it, there stood the captain of the ship.
"Mr. Taylor," he said, "we have no wind. We are drifting toward an island where the people are heathen, and I fear they are cannibals." "What can I do?" asked Taylor. "I understand that you believe in God. I want you to pray for wind." "All right, Captain, I will, but you must set the sail." "Why?" "That’s ridiculous!
There’s not even the slightest breeze. Besides, the sailors will think I’m crazy." But finally, because of Taylor’s insistence, he agreed. Forty-five minutes later, he returned and found the missionary still on his knees.
"You can stop praying now," said the captain. "We’ve got more wind than we know what to do with!"
The Bible passage contains acts of faith by patriarchs, judges and King David also who defeated well-equipped heathen armies in battle. Natural laws were suspended through demonstration of faith and these faith-filled heroes overcame difficult situations in life and became valiant in fight.
They paid a tremendous price for what they believed in. They were men and women who would not accept deliverance or any other blessing on the condition that they deny their faith but held on till they died for the truth they held so dear.
We must recognise that great things can only happen when we put our faith to work during challenges and trials. As we approach the very end of the end-time, it’s not only the love of many that are waxing cold but their faith also are nosediving.
In order not to falter or fall, our faith must be focused only on God such that no matter the circumstances that arise, we are able to hold firm till the end.
Thought for the day: Tests and tempests are often the forerunners of testimonies.
