Pastor Faith Oyedepo: Saturday September 19, 2015 Daily Devotional – The Law of Departure

Topic: The Law of Departure [Saturday 19 September, 2015]

“And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?”-Matthew 19:5

There is nothing more devastating in marriage than for one or both partners to be tied to the apron strings of his or her parents; forgetting that this new family, comes first. That is where most challenges in marriage begin. When the law of departure is broken, you automatically open the door to all manner of negative events.

For instance, every decision regarding the home should be made solely by the couple involved. When you start seeking opinions from your parents, friends or extended family on what you should or should not do in your home, how you should relate with your spouse, when you should give to your spouse and/or others, or what to give, you are posing a threat to your own home. This is why many couples don’t feel at home in their matrimonial homes, because it no longer is a marriage with three or more people in it.

The law of departure is about gaining parental independence before marriage. This does not mean that you have nothing to do with your family anymore but rather, that you are willing to take decisions, independent of your parents, ready to accept personal responsibility for the same. It shows that you are mature enough to make the right choices and stand by them.

Some people even go as far as reporting every issue that should be kept personal between spouses, to their family and friends. Until the door is shut against all forms of interference, you cannot get the best out of your marriage. Marriage is between two people and it is only when these two work together in agreement that they can put 10,000 to flight. Your marriage shall wax stronger in the name of Jesus Christ!

Remain Blessed!
