Igho Sanomi will receive the prestigious Martin Luther King Legacy Award for International Service from the Washington-based Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine at the annual International Salute to the life and Legacy of Dr Martin Luther King. The annual celebration, which is hosted by the International Salute Committee, will be held in Washington DC on the 24th January 2015.
In tribute to the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King, the International Salute recognizes the distinguished leadership and contributions of exceptional individuals who have positively impacted the global community, presenting them with the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award in honour of the pioneering leader of the African-American civil rights movement.
The International Salute has been held annually since 1992 as a way of sharing Dr King’s historical work at home and abroad. In so doing, it brings together a broad segment of the global community to reinforce the importance of continuing the work begun by Dr King.
Mr Sanomi joins a distinguished group of previous International Service award recipients including, the former US Secretary of State, General Colin Powell; Kofi Annan, former Secretary General, United Nations; US Congressman, John Lewis; US Senator Bob Dole and a host of ambassadors from the US, France, Africa, United Kingdom and Germany.
To continue the legacy, Mr Sanomi has also been invited to make the opening remarks at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Global Health Equity Summit on 20th January 2015.
