Pastor Faith Oyedepo: Sunday June 21, 2015 Daily Devotional – Mentoring your Children

Topic: Mentoring your Children [Sunday June 21, 2015]

“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”-Deuteronomy 6:7

Today, in our search through almost all things web, magazines or newspaper, we come across adverts for mentorship programmes; crossing all kinds of boundaries, even those of age. However, the best mentor your children could ever truly have is you. By definition, a mentor is a person who gives another person help and/or advice over a period of time, and often teaches him or her how to do his or her job. This definition clearly describes God’s purpose for parental relationships with one’s children.

Inasmuch as it is our privileged duty to be mentors to our children, not everyone adequately assumes this role; and some who do, only are negative influences. Your responsibility as a mentor is to leave a footprint in the sands of time that your child will be pleased to adequately follow. It is about giving them good examples which they can learn from, and imitate.

For fathers, it is not God’s vision that you leave this responsibility to your wife. Your children need you just as much as they need their mother. In actuality, you are the best teacher to show them how they may pattern their life, career, investments and even relationships. When a child has a father that is willing and caring enough to mentor him or her, the results are absolutely outstanding.

So, rather than occupying yourself with office duties alone, or merely providing the finances for the family, why not seek out time to help, give advice and coach your children on what makes for their success in life. They watch every move you make, and to a large extent, what they see is what they will emulate in the nearest future. So, be wise to being a great mentor to them, as your assuming this responsibility amounts to their great tomorrow.

Remain Blessed!
