Okay, Naija, let’s start with a little round of “Did you know?” Did you know that on the average, there are 25 percent fewer women than men that have access to the internet in the developing world? And that this statistics goes up as high as 45 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa?
Intel knows. As a matter of fact, the ICT giant commissioned a study that yielded these findings. But there’s good news, people: Intel is doing something to correct the situation through its Intel She will Connect initiative that aims to get 5 million young women across Africa tech-savvy and online in the next five years.
Recently, Intel took its crusade to the Abuja Summer Camp organized by the Visiola Foundation for youths who are academically brilliant in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to train the very enthusiastic girls in the use of multimedia.
Lade Araba, who established and administers the Visiola Foundation was also thrilled by the occasion and welcomed future collaborations. Araba said, “Since the mission of the Intel She will Connect project ties in with the vision of our Foundation to groom leaders of tomorrow with a solid grounding in Science and Technology, we are excited by the possibility of what we can achieve together.”
Award winning poet and actor, Titilope Sonuga who is the Intel She Will Connect Ambassador was also on hand to speak with the girls: “We live in a world that runs on technology and Intel believes if we teach young people as yourselves to use Information and Communication technology to empower your lives, you will in turn empower your families, your society and the world.”
