Topic: Teach us to pray [Sunday August 9, 2015]
“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”-Luke 11:1
Most of my life I have been inspired by little children; for the way they believe in every word spoken by an adult and imitate the behaviour of others. This intrigue was further advanced at meeting a certain three year old girl.Aside from her sharpness, she executed a certain behaviour that I believe she must have learnt from her parents. This unique behaviour was that whenever she woke up in the morning, she would kneel by her bedside to pray.
Although what she said was not clearly understood at that time, she knew she had to pray every morning and I believe God understood every word she uttered. On the other hand, I have also met some children, some of whom are older than that little girl was at that time, who don’t know how or “prefer not to” pray; even when others do.
It is important as parents to teach your children how to pray; especially through your own prayer lifestyle. From the above scripture, the disciples saw Jesus praying and asked to be taught how; even though that wouldn’t have been the first time they saw Him pray. They understood that if prayers were so important to their Master, they then, must learn how to pray. They believed that it must at least be of benefit.
Similarly, you don’t have to say to your children “Today we are learning how to pray.” Through your prayer lifestyle and how effective your prayer life has been to your family, they would automatically be interested in prayers. Don’t say they are too young to be there when you observe morning and evening devotions. No matter their age, make it of necessity that they are present at every of your prayer meetings. If prayer is essential to life, it definitely would be of benefit to your children. Teach them to pray and the importance of a steady prayer life and you will reap the rewards in future.
Remain Blessed!
