Topic: No High Looks [Saturday July 18, 2015]

Text: Romans 12:1-8

Key Verse: “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” (Romans 12:3).

One thing that is very common in our world today is the “notice me” attitude that is being put forth by virtually everyone. This attitude is the thing behind what most people do. But the Spirit of the Lord is warning against such practice in our text. The Lord expects us to present our bodies and yield all we have to Him as living sacrifices. Once this is done, we are no longer in possession of ourselves. All that we have – gifts, talents, treasures, beauties, graces, etc., no longer belong to us. They are now the Lord’s who owns us. This being the case, we can no longer use our bodies and all that we have the way we like. They are to be used to the glory of God.

Having this understanding then, we know that all gifts and graces we possess have been endowed to us by God. In the exercise of these gifts therefore, there must not be a show of pride or boasting. Every gift and privilege must be used with the understanding that it is God that has so graciously endowed us with them. Also, in the exercise of our gifts, we must not try to go out of the limit of the grace that God has given to us. Our ministries must be “…according to the grace that is given to us…” Those who go out of the limit of grace are the self-conceited who desire nothing but a show of self and a pursuit of self glory.

In the same vein, as we recognize our gifts and seek to use them to the glory of God, we must also recognize and appreciate the gifts and grace of God in the lives of others. We must realize that we and others make up the body of Christ and all of us together have important functions in the body. Therefore, we must not do anything to run down, belittle or overshadow other people’s gift, nor prevent them from functioning with their gifts.
