Speaking at the Women of West Africa Entrepreneurship Festival (WOWE) 2015 held on June 25th at the Landmark Event Centre in Oniru Lagos, the Managing Director of Kaymu Nigeria, Evangeline Wiles, represented by the Head of Public Relations and Offline Marketing, Tomiwa Oladele stated that women-owned businesses are on the rise, thanks to the technological advancements of the internet and social media in particular.
“The Nigerian ICT industry is dominated by men, partly due to the fact that many women choose to opt out of science and technology for fear of the technicality involved and society’s expectations of the career paths women should pursue; However more and more women are turning the challenges of being a woman in tech to opportunities”, she said.
Oladele further stated ‘’women are using technology and digital tools to work independently, to market their brands, to monitor results and in particular to balance their personal and career lives. This is very evident in the growing number of female entrepreneurs making giant strides on our platform’’.
“Nigerian women are recognising the need to equip themselves with skills needed to maintain a battle playing field with their male counterparts in the ICT industry”, she added.
The third edition of the Women of West Africa Entrepreneurship Festival featured seasoned experts from all over West African Countries including the CEO of Digital Jewels, Adedoyin Odunfan, CEO of Youth Technology Foundation, Njideka Harry and the Co-CEO of Jumia,Fatoumata Ba amongst others.
