Kano State Governor Slashes Salaries of Political Office Holders by 50%

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje has slashed the emoluments of political office holders under his purview by half, citing the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) recently held a crisis meeting in the nation’s capital seeking a bailout as a raft of the States in the federation are unable to pay salaries no thanks to the slump in the international price of oil.

Those who will be affected by Ganduje’s belt tightening measure are the Kano State Deputy Governor, Hafiz Abubakar, all 13 Commissioners, special advisers and several assistants.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has also been implementing austerity measures in his State. He recently announced that his State wouldn’t be able to dish out freebies during Ramadan and has slashed the salaries of political office holders. El-Rufai also reduced the number of Ministries in Kaduna from 19 to 13 to cut governance cost.
