FG declares Tuesday, Wednesday Public Holiday to mark Eid-el Fitri Celebrations

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 5th and Wednesday, 6th July, 2016 as public holiday to mark Eid-el Fitri Celebrations.

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja ans signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Mr Basse Akpayung. The statement said the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, “enjoined all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which are love, peace and justice to their daily living and through this contribute to the development of the nation”.

The outcomes of misuse of cough syrups

A medical practitioner, Dr Steve Anyebe, has decried the misuse and abuse of cough syrups by youths in many areas of Kaduna State.

Anyebe, a staff of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kaduna that drug abuse and misuse had become rampant among youths, “especially students and housewives.”

Washington (AP) — Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says there is an "unfolding situation" at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland but is providing no further details.

The base tweeted Thursday it is on lockdown due to a report of an active shooter. Joint Base Andrews is home to Air Force One.

Forgive me if I am wrong but I have always imagined the Senior Advocate of Nigeria title to be a tag worn by members of an elite club within the legal profession to signify their distinction from the rest of their tribe. However, two disenchanting incidents made me question what I thought SAN stands for. First was in February when the media reported that at the arraignment of Rickey Tarfa (SAN) over alleged corrupt practices, another SAN, Adeniyi Akintola, led a team of “over 90 Senior Advocates and other lawyers” to represent him. Second was when 13 SANs and 10 other (lesser) counsel were hired to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari from presenting the certificate they said he once earned. If the SAN-ship is about honourable distinction, then, why do these SANs seem so cheap that one can hire that many at once and shepherd them to court? Senate President Bukola Saraki also went to court with 66 lawyers (and at the same time, 30 senators).

INEC issued certificate of return to PDP member, Uche Ogah , following an order by the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday June 27th, 2016, mandating INEC to immediately issue Certificate of Return to Ogah who came second at the PDP primaries in the state in 2014.

When Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made good the promise of President Muhammadu Buhari to release the details of money and other assets recovered from persons who had looted the country’s treasury, Nigerians were justifiably excited at the progress so far made.

The minister informed the world that the Buhari administration, from its debut on May 29, 2015 to May 25, 2016, recovered about N116.2 billion cash (excluding USD 5 billion described as interim forfeitures) and 239 physical property that included undeveloped lands, uncompleted and completed buildings, vehicles, maritime vessels and farm lands. The cash recoveries, according to Mohammed, had been kept in a special account.

A former Minister, diplomat and politician, Chief Ojo Maduekwe is dead. He was 71.

Chie Maduekwe,a former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who served in all the PDP governments between 1999 and 2015, died yesterday in Abuja. He slumped inside a vehicle on his way from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Merriam Webster dictionary defines hierarchy as a system in which people or things are placed in a series of levels with different importance or status. In all organisations, Channel of communication has been established, the modality has to be strictly followed. Though their roles are different, yet, they're all important.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Wednesday, kicked against the Federal Government’s directive for tertiary institutions to scrap the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, for admission of candidates for the 2016/2017 academic session, saying the quality of tertiary education in the country could improve if the institutions are allowed to regulate their students admission process.

An Abuja High Court has declared as “null and void” the process that produced a former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The judge, Valentine Ashi, faulted the amended PDP Constitution in 2014, which led to the emergence of Mr. Sheriff as the party’s chairman, after the resignation of former Bauchi State governor, Adamu Muazu.

ONELGA Youths surrender arms, embrace amnesty in Rivers State

A peace move has been initiated in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government area of Rivers State as known notorious cultists have embraced amnesty for the sake of peace.

ONELGA is one of the Local government areas in Rivers state bedevilled with criminal activities; killings, daylight robberies, kidnappings, cult clashes, vandalism, and other heinous crimes.

The Local government was also desolate with political killings since 2013 leading to the 2015 general elections where hundreds of families were left mourning their deaths.

An Abuja high court has dismissed a fundamental rights suit filed by Femi Fani-Kayode, challenging his prolonged detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesman of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organisation, was held in detention for at least 50 days before he was charged to court.

About thirty-two workers of The Guardian newspaper were on Tuesday sacked by the management due to dwindling income.

The affected workers, it was learnt, received letters of termination of appointments on Tuesday.

Ex-leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Chief Government Ekpemupolo (AKA Tompolo) has expressed a wish to meet President Muhammadu Buhari on the Niger Delta crisis.

Tompolo who is still in hiding, in a letter to the President said the meeting would present him with an opportunity to tell President Buhari his own side of the story.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation, saying the sovereignty of the nation is negotiable.

Speaking during a visit to PUNCH Place, the corporate headquarters of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Kilometre 14, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, on Tuesday, Soyinka said decentralisation of the nation would ensure healthy rivalry among the component units.

Although there are objections from certain quarters, that the Federal Government should not negotiate with the emergent militant group known as the Niger Delta Avengers, good reason suggests the contrary. And the readiness of the militants to dialogue with government should be viewed as an auspicious opportunity to genuinely address the cause of renewed militancy in the Niger Delta region.

In fact, one verse says that He longs to be good to those who are looking for His goodness.

Nigerian David Emare, who was the oldest verified African living in Manchester, UK, is dead.

Surrounded by family members, Pa David, as he was affectionately called, died in a Manchester hospital on Wednesday, 8th June.

The Federal Government has investigated and cleared the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai over his assets and military acquisitions just as the nature of his offshore investments has been shown to be based on capital market principles of shareholding.

The capital market principle that governed the properties in issue, as it was found by investigators, was akin to having shares in companies instead of wholly owning the properties.

I was struck by a phrase I heard quoted from a contemporary Bible translation. When I Googled the phrase “our way of life” to locate the passage, many of the results focused on things people felt were threatening their expected way of living. Prominent among the perceived threats were climate change, terrorism, and government policies.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was unnecessarily giddy in self-praise when it launched its campaign themed: “Clean Hands against Corruption,’’ at the Eagle Square, Abuja, the other day. Declaring that it had “kept faith with our mandate and the expectations of Nigerians,’’ Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu, said Nigerians and members of the international community had testified that “the past glory of the EFCC is now being restored.’’ The justification for this assertion was his report of having secured “over 140 convictions’’ in the last six months, “recovered billions’ worth of dollars of stolen funds’’ and “blocked numerous avenues for money laundering.’’

The presence of the Lord in your life makes you a unique person among others. Everywhere you go and everything you do, make sure you don't leave God's presence behind, always go with Him. Just as a snail cannot go anywhere without it shell, so we must not go anywhere without His presence. Whatever will cause you God's presence must be done away with and cling to all that enhance His divine presence.

Lagos, June 2016: BET Africa (DStv channel 129) has revealed that legendary South African artist Black Coffee has become the first South African artist to win Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards, while Nigerian newcomer Falz has accelerated his career with a well-deserved win in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New Act category.

A Federal High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria on Monday ordered the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, to vacate office immediately.

This order follows allegation that he submitted false information to his party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the party’s governorship primary in December 2014.

The Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, said it has uncovered a plot by Governor Nyesom Wike to smear, intimidate and blackmail the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa and other Appeal Court Justices using the so-called Integrity Group led by one Livingstone Wechie and his cohorts.
