Topic — Family Dominion, How Possible? (4)

Dear Reader,

I started this series by examining how obedience to God’s Word empowers you and your family for dominion. I also explained how you can live peacefully with your people and equally examined how you can enjoy rest in your family.

Today, I shall be teaching on Keeping the Right Company. God’s will is that you succeed and be in charge (dominion) in your family life; but there are vices you need to guard against.

There is dignity in marriage, but it takes the right character to attract it. Character commands unction which in turn commands dignity. The reason for the failure of most marriages and families is character crisis. Good character fosters family dominion which depends largely on the company you keep.

It is impossible to amount to anything outside the company you keep. You cannot expect to live a better life than your companions. This explains why Proverbs 13:20 says: He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Family friends can be defined as persons with whom you and your family relate intimately with. They are people you identify with, share common experiences and bare your mind to. This simple definition of family friend shows that not everyone is a friend. That is why you need wisdom through God’s Word in selecting who your friends should be.

Whosoever keeps company with the wise will be wise; the companions of fools will not only be foolish, but will ultimately be destroyed. Also, the friend of the unrighteous will ultimately become unrighteous to the detriment of his family. As a Christian, do not fail to understand that you cannot flow together with just anybody, simply because they make themselves friendly.

You cannot be a Christian, while your family friend is an unbeliever; a smoker, adulterer, drunkard, gossip or a backbiter. What companionship do you have with an unbeliever? Anyone who is lacking in Christian character should never be your family friend.

God’s instruction in 2 Thessalonians 3:6 is worthy of note: …that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly… Many call themselves family friends but are not disciplined to refrain from certain habits. I believe that the choice of your family friend does not only affect the future of your family but it could also determine the success (dominion) or failure of your marriage. Hence, your family’s vision, goal or target in life should determine your choice of family friends.

As a born again Christian who desires an enviable family, you must make up your mind to dissociate yourself from every friend that thinks or talks contrary to God’s Word. Choose to have godly family friends and your marital life will be moulded. May God bring you in contact with friends that will skyrocket you and your family to your place in destiny! May you never keep a company that will keep you away from God and rob your family of its dominion!

Note that the company you keep either makes or breaks your family; definitely, it does not leave you neutral. It was a friend that made Amnon, David’s son, to commit incest (2 Samuel 13:1-4). He later paid with his life, for the wrong company he kept.

Most couples, who find themselves in all forms of evil today, got into them via wrong company. One major reason couples are enticed to keep the wrong company is because they are not bold enough to identify with the Lord Jesus Christ. Let people know your stand for God; go to Church together, pray together and engage in Gospel programmes together.

The Bible says: Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34). This simply means that righteousness or right standing with God will bring about dominion. Therefore, for your family to enjoy dominion, it must have a right standing with God. This depends on each and every member of the family.

If you are indecisive as to who to pick as your family friend, ask God in prayer and He will give you direction. Disallow your spouse and children from keeping the wrong company. This is because the effect of the company any member of the family keeps will sooner or later affect the entire family. Your marriage and family will succeed in Jesus’ name!

Are you born again? If you are not, then you don’t have genuine access to operate the mind of Christ that will help you make the right choices of family friends (1 Corinthians 2:16). If you want to be born again, please say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord, I come to You today.  I am a sinner.  Forgive me of my sins.  Cleanse me with Your precious Blood.  I accept You as my Lord and Saviour.  Now I know I am born again!
