Topic: Courting God’s Mercy [Saturday October 17, 2015]

Text: Psalms 89:35-52

Key Verse: “How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?” (Psalms 89:46).

George Washington, the first President of United States of America, in his inaugural prayer for the nation, prayed: “Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection for one another and for their fellow citizens at large.

And, finally, that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and to demean ourselves with charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind.” The psalmist made a special prayer full of complaints that, in spite of God’s promises to establish the kingdom of David forever, the royal family had faced some crises and was nearly ruined. After the complaints, he turned into prayer, seeking God’s mercy. He had not lost confidence in Him. He noted that their afflictions came because God hid Himself from the people, which could be because of their sins. He had high hopes that God would forgive and show them His favourable countenance. He pointed out the brevity of human life, which, if they did not receive any taste of the divine goodness, would imply they were created in vain. He drew God’s attention to His previous mercy towards their forefathers, and how other people now ridiculed them because He had abandoned them.

Many Christians today are accusing God of leaving them in the lurch. They fail to find out the cause of their affliction. God is never the cause of any problem; man is. Where there is sin to be repented of, do so without delay to avoid its retributive justice. If the challenge is from Satan, then utilise the weapons of our warfare to defeat him and his agents. In all things, refrain from charging God foolishly; plead for His mercy always.

Thought for the day: To reject mercy here is to face judgment in eternity.
