Topic: Beyond a Cruse of Oil [August 22, 2016]
Text: 2 Kings 4:1-7
Key Verse: "And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil" (2 Kings 4:2).
Some so-called believers would rather stay idle and sleep all day instead of finding something profitable to do with their hands. Others are looking for the elusive white or blue collar jobs in a tight economy. They would rather go about begging than be occupied in doing an honourable job.
Those who desire God's blessing must be ready to wake up early and work hard. When a certain woman of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha concerning her inability to pay the debts left behind by her late husband, Elisha wanted to know what was going for her. When he discovered the only thing available in the house was a pot of oil, he prayed over the oil to maintain a ceaseless flow until all her vessels were filled. When she came back to the man of God to report the miracle of supernatural supply, she was told to sell them, pay her debts and live on the rest with her sons. Like the woman in our text, there are many believers looking for financial breakthrough.
What we learn from this passage is the need to find out what's going for you - the commodity you can sell or the service you can provide. That is where the blessing may begin. The woman surely knows something about oil because she had some in her house already. It was a business she understands to do. We need to understand that blessing and multiplication sometimes come upon what we already know how to do.
There should be no room for laziness, and we must not despise the day of small beginnings; neither should we feel debased by the product we're selling. There ought to be no lack or want for those whose trust is in God for the deposit of His grace is ever with them.
Thought for the day: Despise not little talents which have the capacity to become great in the morrow.
