DCLM Daily Manna, Wednesday December 2, 2015 by Pastor Kumuyi – Jesus Wept

Topic: Jesus Wept [Wednesday December 2, 2015]

Text: John 11:33-40

Key Verse: “Jesus wept” (John 11:35).

In most cultures, men are brought up to believe that shedding tears is a sign of weakness and emotional instability. Because women are more emotional, it is considered normal for them to express their feelings with tears.

However, memory lane is dotted with notable cases of the stoutest of men cracking up with tears in certain circumstances. Today’s key verse, “Jesus wept” is the shortest verse in the Bible, and it is equally significant. If there is anyone on whose cheeks tears were never expected, it was Christ, the King of kings and Lord of lords. But He wept. However, this did not reduce His character or divinity. Here, He wept in a house of mourning – on His way to Lazarus’ grave. The tears he shed were an expression of His tender affection for Lazarus as attested to by the Jews around Him. “Behold how he loved him!” they said. Of course, still groaning in His heart, He eventually raised Lazarus from death. Christ did not weep over any personal loss or pain. Even the cruel scourging of the Roman soldiers did not draw tears from his eyes. While hanging on the cross, He admonished His weeping admirers to “weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.”

He wept over Jerusalem for the impending destruction coming on it and the failure of its inhabitants to seize the opportunity of His mission and ministry to change their fortune. How tender is your heart? Are you easily moved to tears because of the sinner’s plight and eternal end of the wicked? Are you part of the godly few who sigh for the decadence in the society? (Ezekiel 9:4). Are you sincerely concerned when things go wrong in the church or society? Weeping is not always a sign of wickedness. You can ask the Lord today to make you a part of the godly few.

Thought for the day: Dry eyes are often a symptom of a hardened heart
