DCLM Daily Manna, Monday May 30 2016 by Pastor Kumuyi - More Than Earthly Display
Topic: More Than Earthly Display [Monday May 30, 2016]
Text: 1 Kings 10:14-29
Key Verse: "So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. And all the earth sought to Solomon, torn hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart" (1 Kings 10:23, 24).
A major breakthrough in medicine was the discovery of the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic to render people insensitive to the pain of surgery in 1847. Behind the discovery was a medical doctor from Edinburgh, Sir James Simpsom. His discovery has saved millions of people the excruciating pains of surgery and popularised him.
Later in life, one of his students at University of Edinburgh asked him what he considered to be the most valuable discovery of his lifetime. The students expected him to refer to chloroform. To their surprise he replied, "My most valuable discovery was when I discovered myself a sinner and that Jesus Christ was my Saviour. " For what do people crave? Wisdom, wealth, fame. . . what else? Instinctively, people pursue these as a means to an end. That end is happiness. Unfortunately, the quest for worldly wealth and fame often blocks the way to true happiness. Outside self discovery in God, lasting happiness is elusive. Those who have climbed the ladders of wisdom, wealth and fame will tell the story better. King Solomon saw it all. Today's text gives an insight into the extent of his wealth and fame which have remained matchless among men till date.
In fact, he was reputed to be the richest and wisest in the world. He employed all he had for his enjoyment and the betterment of his subjects. Yet, Solomon informs us that worldly acquisitions and attainments are vain without the fear of and obedience to God (Ecclesiastes 12:8, 13). How we need to hold the things of this world with loose hands by not setting our hearts on them!
Thought for the day: To measure your true riches and rating, check your heart.
