Topic: Sword of His Judgment [Thursday March 24, 2016]

Text: Ezekiel 6:8-14

Key Verse: "Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries" (Ezekiel 6:8).

When God's pendulum of judgment swings from favour to punishment because of sin, His hand does not stay forever on the whip. God stands on the watch, expecting godly contrition on the part of the transgressor. In other words, He does not apply the rod to destroy the sinner but to bring the person back to Himself. This is the core lesson in our passage today.

Israel had committed spiritual adultery by the worship of false gods, thus splitting their loyalty between Jehovah and idols. This was a travesty of the first commandment and it carried the death penalty. No man who truly loves his wife would tolerate her whoredom. He would press for a restoration of the sanctity of the conjugal union. No less would God do for the idol-chasing children of Israel.

Although the Almighty decided He would subject them to the scourge of invasion and captivity, He said, "Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries" (Ezekiel 6:8). It was a severe pronouncement that reflected how "hurt" God was to see Israel reject their Maker and Redeemer and turn to powerless idols. It is inevitable that God's fury would come upon the wicked for correction and discipline. But while this mercy of God waits, the sinner must make haste to take advantage of it before it is too late. The door can be shut soon as it was in the days of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, Ananias and Sapphira.

The Bible is clear about this seemingly limitless stay of God's judgment (2 Peter 3:8, 9). The sinner and backslider should not refrain a second longer from repenting while the believer must constantly watch against sin to avoid being drawn into eternal perdition

Thought for the day: There is no appeal after God's Judgment Day.
