Topic: Don't Be Left Out [Wednesday March 2, 2016]

Text: Nehemiah 3:6-32

Key Verse: "Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof" (Nehemiah 3:6).

The work of the Kingdom is every believer's business. Shying away from the work of God casts doubt on our claim of serving Him truly. Throughout His earthly sojourn, Christ was always doing His Father's bidden. In our passage today, we are confronted with the exploits of Nehemiah and his kinsmen after he had a clear picture of the level of devastation at Jerusalem. Faithful men were appointed to rebuild the walls that had been broken down.

Despite the taunting by Sanballat and Tobiah in the preceding chapter, Nehemiah and his men were determined to enlist in the urgent task of rebuilding the walls. Duties were allocated to different men who faithfully executed them. There was a division of labour. Failure of one person could have delayed the entire project as some people's duties depended on the completion of others'.

As believers, there are various duties God, through his ministers, has assigned us. How well are we carrying out such assignments? How diligent are we in delivering without causing a hiccup in the chain of progress in the Lord's work? Those appointed by Nehemiah never slept on the job, they knew time was of essence. How responsive are we to the call to build the house of God where we worship Him in truth and in spirit? The good job done by these men was responsible for the documentation of their names, which today serves as a challenge to us.

Note that everyone willingly accepted the task given to him and worked faithfully to ensure the work was done at record time. Those who choose to remain idle when the call is made for the Lord's business run the risk of incurring His wrath. Believers are hereby reminded of the urgent task of evangelism which is the very heartbeat of God.

Thought for the day: The busy bee has no time for sorrow.
