Nigeria drifting towards dictatorship – PDP

Publicity Secretary of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Dayo Adeyeye said Nigeria is gradually mov­ing towards dictatorship, adding that without a for­midable opposition party, there would be “full-blown dictatorship.”

Adeyeye also alleged that Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff and his team were agents of the All Progressives Con­gress (APC).

He said this yesterday when he addressed news­men in Port Harcourt, Riv­ers State.

“Gradually, we are drift­ing towards dictatorship and it is very dangerous for our democracy. That is why we need PDP to be united and very strong. And APC people realise this and do not want it to work.

“We are being reminded why African leaders sit-tight in power. We thought that other politicians would follow the path of former president Good­luck Jonathan. Instead, election became war, and, right now, the APC mem­bers are waging a terrible war on PDP. Serious war!

“And, I tell you, if we don’t have PDP as a strong party, short-sighted people may not know the conse­quence. This is because, once all oppositions are muzzled, of course, what we will have is full-blown dictatorship. The best is to have PDP as a strong and virile opposition party.”

He alleged people have been manipulating the judiciary to destroy the country, emphasizing that Sheriff has no basis to still claim chairmanship of the party.

He added that the deci­sion taken at the national convention in Port Har­court, that dropped all the national officers, was final, emphasising that the con­vention was the supreme organ of the party,

He stated: “Sheriff has no legal basis to claim to be chairman of PDP. If he has judgment of court sup­porting him, let him show it to the public. He stressed that none of the court judg­ments recognised him as chairman of PDP.

“That convention held properly and legally. Con­vention said Sheriff and all the national committees were removed. So, when you look at it from the po­litical angle, he is no more the chairman of PDP.”

Meanwhile, the party has described the defec­tion of former speaker of Edo House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei and the governorship candidate of Labour Party in the last general election, Great Og­boru as “inconsequential.”

Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Mr. Michael Osuoza promised the defectors “they would soon find themselves in political wilderness,” and noted that those before them ended up commit­ting political suicide.

Osuoza described the defectors “as political spent forces who lack the capac­ity to win election even in their own wards, let alone local government and state levels.”

He stressed that the PDP still has the politi­cal wherewithal to defeat them in future elections.
