Eight persons arrested during a demonstration by pro-Biafra groups in Asaba, Delta State, would soon be charged to court for murder and other offences, acting Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Charles Muka told Daily Sun yesterday.
Muka, a Superintendent Police Officer, however, said investigation was still on-going in the murder of “two patriotic police officers in the line of duty.”
Members of pro-Biafran groups, including Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) had, on Monday, trooped to streets of Asaba to celebrate the anniversary of the proclamation of Biafra by Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu on May 30, 1967.
The celebration, which was in form of demonstration, however went awry as two police officers allegedly died in different parts of the town during an encounter with the groups.
Meanwhile, Delta State government has restated that no part of the state was under proposed Biafra territory and condemned IPOB, MASSOB and BIM agitation for self rule.
In Enugu State, the Police Command, through state Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department, arraigned 13 persons suspected to be MASSOB members yesterday.
The suspects were arrested on Monday at the popular Edinburgh Roundabout in Ogui New Layout area of the state while celebrating Biafra Day.
They were arraigned at the Magistrate Court 6 presided over by E.N Alukwu in the Enugu North magisterial District in charge No 245c/2016 for belonging to unlawful society called Movement for MASSOB.
They were charged for committing an offence punishable under Section 495(a) of the criminal Code cap 30 Vol.11 laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004 and also for taking part in an unlawful assembly and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 106 of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Vol.11 laws of Enugu State of Nigeria amongst other charges.
The case was adjourned till June 23 for hearing.
