Topic: Truly, God Is Good! [October 21, 2016]
Text: Psalm 73:1-17
Key Verse: "Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart" (Psalm 73:1).
The final analysis and conclusion of people who truly know God and understand His dealings is that "God is truly good". He is not unrighteous or unfaithful. Many times, we tend to misjudge His dealings with ours, particularly when we become impatient with Him and do not understand the direction He is leading us or look in other directions, making undue carnal comparison. But if we patiently trust and wait for God's time, we too will come to the conclusion that He is good. The psalmist had thought that his faith in God was in vain and that he had been stupid, trying to live a righteous life.
He drew this conclusion when he compared his lot with his neighbors who live in all forms of wickedness without any recourse to God and His Word. The prosperity of the wicked is but for a moment of time. They wither away as soon as they sprout up. Their gains do not last. So, it is not worth envying. Sometimes, things may not go well with the believer, but that does not mean that God is not good or faithful to him. Whatever path the He chooses for a Christian is for his ultimate good and well-being. He does not tempt anyone with evil. We sometimes misjudge His intention and purpose when we fail to look in the direction He wants us to look and are not patient enough to walk at His pace. Envy makes us miserable and lose sight of all the good things around us.
It blurs our eyes and dims our vision such that we cannot see His goodness all around us. The more you pointedly look at the wicked and his seeming prosperity, the more miserable you will become. You will forget all the goodness of God to you in the past and will not be able to see all the good things that He has in store for you. This is why Johnson Oatman Jnr in his hymn, counsels you to "Count your blessings, name them one by one; and it will surprise you what the Lord has done". When you do this, you too will conclude with the psalmist, truly, God is good!
Thought for the day: Envy only makes life miserable.
